Miami-Haiti Annual Report: No. 23 trade partner- Clothing connection

Textile supplies and assembled garments played key roles in South Florida’s trade exchange with Haiti.

Haiti’s expatriates, predominantly those living in Florida, are the biggest catalysts of trade beween the struggling Caribbean country and the United Stets.

The least-developed country in the hemisphere and one of the poorest in the world conducts nearly 73 percent of its $1.1 billion in annual trade with the United States through the Miami Customs District. Last year, Haiti and South Florida exchanged nearly $805 million in goods, an increase of 10 percent from a year earlier.

In 2005, Miami exports to the Caribbean country and its imports from Haiti were relatively even, leaving just a $5.5 trade deficit for South Florida.

On the export side, textile industry products saw colossal jumps.

Many of the products are sent or received by Haitian-owned companies in the United States. Shipments of knit or crocheted fabrics rose nearly 213 percent to close the surpassing $52 million. Haiti is home to apparel assembly plants. South Florida exports of men’s and boys’ shirts knit or crocheted were also up dramatically. They rose nearly 163 percent to total $13 million.

T-shirts and tank tops, the most valuable South Florida export to Haiti, jumped 53 percent. They closed the year worth nearly $107 million.

Poultry also saw gains on the export roster, as Miami shipped nearly $400 million to its No. 23 trade partner.

Apparel set the pace on the import side. Every one of the Top 5 import commodities from Haiti was a garment category, led by a 55 percent hike in the value of T-shirt and tank top shipments. South Florida imported $159 million Haitian-made T-shirts and tank tops. Men’s and boy’s knit and crocheted shirts rose even more, skyrocketing 93 percent to $13.5 million.

Overall, South Florida exports to Haiti saw gains of 24 percent as they surpassed $405 million.
