Tapping trade opportunities
The seven nations that anchor the bottom of South Florida’s top trade partner list are a diverse collection of countries. Europe, Asia, Central and South America and the Caribbean are all represented.
This group includes the fastest-growing trade partner, the Netherlands, which saw its commerce with South Florida rise an astronomical 73 percent in 2005. It also includes the country that saw the biggest backslide, Spain. Its trade fell off nearly 31 percent.
Notably, among these seven, only Spain posted a loss. All the others saw double-digit percentage leaps in trade with South Florida last year.
For some of these traders, notably Paraguay and Haiti, South Florida is overwhelmingly their door to the United States. More than 83 percent of Paraguay’s trade with the United States is through Miami. For Haiti, it is 73 percent largely because the trade is fueled by Haitian businesses and entrepreneurs based in South Florida.
The commodity exchange with these nations runs the gamut from beer and petroleum products to saddles and antibiotics. Artwork a new and growing commodity for South Florida is exchanged with these traders.
These are the traders that have much to gain and to lose as Miami’s roster of trading nations begins to calibrate in 2006. Two of the Seven with Spark fall into South Florida’s billion-dollar trading club and one more, Panama, is poised to join the group this year.
Miami had a trade deficit with five of the countries in this category. That includes one of its smallest deficits: the $5.5 million difference between imports and exports with Haiti. Of the countries with which Miami had a trade shortfall and they were the minority as South Florida headed to an overall $2.2 trade surplus last year only El Salvador caused a smaller surplus that Haiti. That was $2.5 million.
