Annual Report: No. 23 Hong Kong - U.S. expands trade surplus

Once upon a time, Hong Kong was the business gateway to China. Now it is working on strategies to maintain its vibrant trade while China takes off on its own course.

U.S. exports surpassed imports, giving the United States a $7.4 billion trade surplus. Electronics and technology components played a key role, with the United States exporting $3 billion in computer chips, $813 million in computer parts, $691 million in computers and $594 million in semiconductors.

Combined, those commodities accounted for nearly a third of total U.S. exports.

Diamonds were also a valuable U.S. export, up 29 percent to total $914 million. The United States also exported $414 million in jewelry parts, a gain of 22 percent.

With U.S. imports, apparel turned up in four of the top 10 commodity categories.

Jewelry was also among top trade products. U.S. imports of jewelry and jewelry parts edged up 1 percent to total $470 million while imports of unmounted diamonds valued $220 million, a 43 percent jump from the year before.

Los Angeles was the Customs district with the greatest volume of Hong Kong trade. In 2005, some $6.5 billion in goods heading to or from the Asian country passed through the Los Angeles and Long Beach area. But that figure was flat compared to 2004.

It was New York that saw greater gains, handling $6 billion in cargo, a jump of 8 percent compared to a year earlier.
