Symantec's head of Latin America, Wilson Grava, provide tips along with Bruce Kaplan, a senior consultant at ASI Global

Ten Tips for Security

At WorldCity’s Global Connections event on May 27, the topic was security and the speakers were both experts in their respective areas and regular travelers to Latin America and around the world:

Wilson Grava, Vice President of Latin America for Symantec; Jean-Michel Caffin, Managing Partner for Axis Americas; and Bruce Kaplan, senior consultant for AGI Global.

Someone at the event and someone unable to attend asked for some practical tips for reducing security threats both personally and with computer usage. With that in mind, we have listed our Top 10 below, in no particular order, and would encourage you to suggest others by emailing Tak Takasu. Some are common sense but nevertheless always worth repeating.

The Top 10:

1. Be aware that security risks may be automatically installed on computers with the installation of file-sharing programs, free downloads, and freeware and shareware versions of software.

2. Do not walk alone at night on dark and deserted streets.

3. Be aware of programs that flash ads in the user interface. Many spyware programs track how users respond to these ads, and their presence is a red flag. These ads may be spyware.

4. Vary routes and times of departure and arrival.

5. When flying, disable or disconnect your wireless card on your laptop

6. Always keep patch levels up to date, especially on computers that host public services and are accessible through the firewall, such as HTTP , FTP, email, and DNS services.

7. Avoid wearing jewelry or expensive jackets, trendy sneakers, “hot” items that might attract potential robbers.

8. If you are being robbed, do not resist. Give them what they want, but do not get in any car or go with them anywhere. Resist if robbers try to take you somewhere else: scream, kick and shout “fire!”

9. Ensure that only applications approved by the organization are deployed on desktop computers.

10. Travel as inconspicuously as possible.

Miami International Airport is one of the five best U.S. airports if you happen to get stuck for some reason, according to SeatGuru.
