Jan Nijman

Jan Nijman is the founding director of the Urban Studies Institute and a distinguished professor at Georgia State University.

His research interests include: urban theory, urban and regional development, and global comparative urban  studies, with regional expertise and extensive field work experience in North America, West Europe and South Asia. This work has been funded by agencies such as National Science Foundation, Association of American Geographers and National Geographic Society. He has been affiliated with National Geographic since 2002 and currently serves as chair of NG’s Global Exploration Fund in Europe

Nijman received his M.A. degree in geography from University of Amsterdam and his Ph.D in geography from University of Colorado at Boulder. He is author of five books and more than 100 other publications in a plethora of journals such as Annals of AAG, and Urban Geography. He was a previous resident of Miami as well
